Slowfoot Records is a South London based record label, exploring the boundaries between popular and experimental music. Led by musicians, Slowfoot began as a group of experimental artists coming together with the ambition of creating a platform for their work; an esoteric blend of krautrock, avant-jazz, dub and electronica.
Since 2001, the label has steadily grown into a strong community of leftfield sonic experimentation, becoming a home for names such as Hello Skinny, Soccer96 and Snack Family, electronic mavericks Robert Logan and Crewdson, and experimental collaborative projects from luminaries such as Seb Rochford/Pamelia Kurstin, Kit Downes and Charles Hayward [Monkey Puzzle Trio], whilst also releasing music from Slowfoot’s house bands, Snorkel and Crackle. Slowfoot’s home is Snorkel Studios, in Forest Hill - a high quality recording studio with an enviable gear list and client list. Label boss Frank Byng, a prolific experimental drummer / producer and current member of This Is Not This Heat, Snorkel, Prescott, Grumbling Fur, Crackle, Daniel O’Sullivan’s Dream Lion Ensemble and many more, works out of the studio recording and producing some key names in the experimental, avant-jazz and electronic music community. Recent clients include Gong, 30/70, Grumbling Fur and Charles Hayward. |
"The London label Slowfoot has evolved organically by occupying the grooves between genres... ....in the last decade Slowfoot's roster of acts and releases has coalesced into an eclectic home for music that might otherwise fall between cracks, but always hits the groove." [The Wire]
"The South London-based label procure a wealth of experimental and boundary shoving talent, with all the fine artists on the label carving their own individual style - yet somehow sharing a similar ethos, a collected consciousness based somewhere in leftfield. Slowfoot bridge the multi-layered gap between old school kraut-jams and afro-beat, with contemporary electronica stylings." [The 405]
"There really aren’t that many labels around that will smash you with shards of electro bolshiness one minute, soothe you with tuba loops the next and then allow you to fully embrace the jazz fiend inside moments later; but Slowfoot manage it and it make it seem like the most normal thing ever."
[Oli Marlow - Rock a Rolla]
"Slowfoot Records is fast becoming one of England's foremost purveyors of essential experimental soundscapes, putting out records that utilise wildly innovative recording processes to make future-music built on the recognizable foundations of genres such as jazz, dub and electronica." [experimusic]
